The Re-publication of The Wilderness of Zin

In 1914 the PEF carried out an archaeological survey of the Negeb.  The archaeological part of the work, by C.L. Woolley and T.E. Lawrence, published in 1915 as PEF Annual III,  is now republished with additional material on the origins of the expedition and the views of the authors on what they found.

Jerusalem in Original Photographs 1850-1920

More than 200 early photographs, many previously unpublished, drawn from the archives of the Palestine Exploration Fund provide a unique visual experience of the city and the manner of life of its inhabitants.  The book is structured around a map of the Old City, made in about 1897, which identifies the location and direction of each photograph, and includes summary biographies of the major photographers concerned.


Beyond the River: Jordan in Early Photographs

Ottoman Transjordan in early photographs - over w200 early images, many previously unpublished, capured throught the lens of treavellers visiting the region during the closing years of the Ottoman Empire and through to the foundation of the Hashemite Kingdom.  Meticulously researched by two prominent scholars in the field.


The Hellenistic Paintings of Marisa

A century ago several Hellenistic painted tombs painted tombs were discovered..  Hand-coloured copies of the paintings on photographic prints, retouched to restore the damage to the originals, were published in 1905.  The original unretouched prints are here published for the first time, with a fresh study of the paintings. 


The Survey of Western Palestine

From 1872-1875 the Fund carried out the first accurate and detailed survey of Western Palestine, and from 1880-1884 published the resulting maps and a series of volumes with a detailed description of the country.  This monumental work has now been republished by Archive Editions.

Introductory Essays to Accompany the Archive Editions facsimile of The Survey of Western Palestine

These two studies, of the Fund's work in Jerusalem in 1867-1870 carried out by Capt. Charles Warren, and of the publication of the great map of Palestine and the accompanying memoirs, utilize the archival resources of the Fund itself as well as the expertise of the authors, and are a major contribution to the understanding and use of the original publications.

Beneath the Church of the Holy Sepulchre

The Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem rests on archaeological remains dating from the first occupation of the site in the Iron Age to the construction of the church in the reign of Constantine the Great.  This monograph consists of a series of studies of the archaeology of the site culminating in the construction of the church.


Below the Temple Mount in Jerusalem

From the Iron Age to the present day numerous quarries, cisterns, conduits, and chambers have been constructed on the Temple Mount.  These have been published piecemeal in various places over the last 150 years.  This volume brings all of this material together in a single reference work for the first time.

The Survey of Palestine Under the British Mandate, 1920-1948

Under the British Mandate Government of Palestine a major survey project was established for the territory.  This work examines the foundation of this enterprise and the motivation of those who carried it out.

Samaria-Sebaste II:  The Early Ivories

This volume was the first volume of the final report of the British excavations at Samaria from 1931-35 to appear, and also the first report on the early ivory carvings discovered there.

The Onomasticon by Eusebius of Caesarea

Eusebius' great study of the location of the place names of the Hebrew Bible has never before been translated into any modern western language.

The Carta Bible Atlas

A good Bible Atlas is an essential tool for the study of the Bible, its geography, history, and archaeology.  For nearly forty years the Macmillan/Carta Bible Atlas, now available in a newly updated edition, has been one of the best.


Ancient Jordan from the Air

Since 1997 David Kennedy and Robert Bewley, with the support and co-operation of the Jordanian authorities, have been carrying out a programme of aerial reconnaissance and photography of the archaeological sites of Jordan.  The first results are published in this book, 220 colour photographs, as important for the study of the archaeology of Jordan as they are beautiful.
