The
Collections of the PEF cover a range of artefacts, disciplines, and
areas of interest. Legitimate
researchers wishing to view and study the
collections
should make
an appointment in advance with the Curator. Those
wishing to use the Library should contact the Librarian.
The Natural History Collection
This
comprises botanical and ornithological specimens from the Levant,
collected on behalf of the PEF by notable naturalists such as Canon H.B.
Tristram, who was active in the Holy Land between the 1860s and 1897, and
Sergeant Armstrong, a member of the Survey of Western Palestine
team in the 1870s.

The Archaeological Collections
The
archaeological collections contain artefacts from the PEF excavations and
surveys in Palestine. The collections range in date from the
Palaeolithic to Islamic times, and consist of a range of artefacts of
stone, pottery, glass, metal and ivory.

The Map Collection
The
Fund has a number of original and manuscript maps and plans, both from its
own projects, such as the Jerusalem excavations conducted by
Warren in the late 1860s, and the Survey of Western Palestine (1871
- 78), as well as work produced by other scholars.

The Picture Collection
The
Fund owns a small collection of watercolours, oils, and drawings. Many of
these items were created specifically for the PEF while others were
bequeathed to the Fund. Images include landscapes, monuments, people, and
scenes of daily life in Palestine from the 1860s onwards.

The Photographic Collection
This
includes a range images of Palestine, Israel, Syria, Trans-Jordan, and
Lebanon dating from the 1850s to the present day. The primary focus of the
archive is on the latter half of the 19th century and the first half of
the 20th century. Prints of images from the photographic collections may
be ordered direct from the Photographic Officer and Curator (e-mail curator@pef.org.
uk).
A catalogue of the collection may be consulted by appointment,
together with a price list.

Warren, Kitchener and Conder

The Library
The library concentrates on the history,
geography, natural history and archaeology of Palestine, Syria, and Lebanon, with additional coverage
of Cyprus, and limited coverage of other areas, including Egypt, Anatolia,
and Mesopotamia. We have a
particularly good collection of nineteenth century travel books, and long
runs of the major journals covering the region.
Use of the library is available to subscribers to the Fund. For a
